Q - Exactly how does point in time snapshot work in this context and to where?
The concept of snapshot is very different from a back-up process. Data is not copied to any media during snap-shot. Instead, it just informs NAS system that all the data blocks in used should be preserved, not to be overwritten, that is why is so fast (in matter of seconds). When a file is modified after a snapshot is created, its original data blocks are protected from being over-written. The new updates are written to a new location. These snap-shots can be schedule and configured per IT personnel. In event of data lost or or destroyed by virus attacks or human errors. Snap-shot roll back can be invoked, it is much faster than restoring from back-up.
